stammt – wie seine beiden Brüder Alfred Backhouse und Thomas James Backhouse - aus einer englischen Familie von Naturforschern, Gartenbauern und Bänkern

wie sein jüngerer Bruder Alfred Backhouse machte er zunächst sein Vermögen mit Kohle

galt als der aktivste Photograph der drei Backhouse-Brüder, seine einzige bekannte ausgestellte Arbeit jedoch ist ein Kollodium-Porträt von 1857

sein bekanntestes Werk ist die posthum veröffentlicht historische Arbeit Early Church History to the Death of Constantine von 1884
